Mark Klinedinst's profile

Katrina Ten Years After

Based in Hattiesburg, MS, Mark Klinedinst serves in the role of emeritus professor of economics at the University of Southern Mississippi. In addition to his teaching and research activities at the university over the course of nearly four decades, Mark Klinedinst co-authored and edited a book called Katrina Ten Years After.

Published in 2015, Katrina Ten Years After is a collection of articles, essays, and other writings exploring the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, with content ranging from personal stories to in-depth economic analysis and how Hurricane Katrina exacerbated ongoing effects of the Great Recession. Similarly, the book authors explore not only the ramifications of Hurricane Katrina in and around Louisiana and Mississippi, but also how the impact of the storm echoed throughout the nation.

Katrina Ten Years After promotes the resilience and generosity of the American people and tells uplifting stories about organizations like the Green Project, an environmentally-focused salvage business based in New Orleans.

That said, the book does not shy away from the less commendable elements of the storm’s aftermath. For example, various socio-economic and ethnic groups came into conflict over how to effectively utilize and distribute aid funds. The Lower Ninth Ward faced a number of challenges on the long road to rebuilding.
